Dr. Heller is well respected among his colleagues, attorneys and the courts

He strives to present an objective, thorough, unbiased, and balanced picture of a defendant, a plaintiff, or family when performing court related evaluations, whether he is the court appointed expert or retained by one of the parties. His primary goal is to provide all involved with the true clinical and forensic analysis of a case. He adheres to ethical and professional standards required for each case. The data collected inform Dr. Heller’s conclusions and support his opinions.

Dr. Heller has been a Clinical and Forensic Psychologist for many years

Since starting his forensic career with his doctoral dissertation at the University of Wisconsin-Madison entitled: “Criminal Behavior and Arousal: Test of a Theory,” he has been a practicing psychologist for over 35 years. Dr. Heller is considered an expert on a wide variety of psychological topics with experience serving a large variety of patients and consulting on a wide range of court related matters. He served as the Director of mental health and substance abuse services for the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma where he established inpatient substance abuse treatment for Native American youth and developed expertise in domestic violence, trauma, alcoholism and other substance abuse. He served as the Clinical Director of the Dutchess County (NY) Clinic for the Multi-disabled, where he supervised and developed expertise with autism spectrum disorder, PTSD and other co-morbid mental disabilities. He has had a clinical and family therapy practice for many years. Since 2005, Dr. Heller has been the forensic consultant to the Rockland County (New York) forensic mental health unit, performing hundreds of evaluations of petitioners, respondents, families and defendants and providing expert testimony for Family and Supreme Court.

Dr. Heller’s University affiliation and expert opinion at trial is useful to educate the court or jury about a psycho-legalistic issue.

He adheres to a scientist-practitioner model and is on staff as a Forensic Psychologist for Rutgers Biomedical and Health Services (RBHS), University Behavioral Healthcare. He is a skilled forensic interviewer who is able to educate a jury about research on a variety of psychological topics, review psychological research for attorneys specific to a case, and write a brief for the legal team based upon the current standards of practice and research. He is adept at explaining psychological and behavioral issues that help the court and jury understand a complex psycho-legalistic situation.

Dr. Heller is often called on to help attorneys analyze a case, review an adverse report done by another psychologist, and assist with cross-examination.

Dr. Heller has consulted with many attorneys- writing peer reviews of other Psychologist’s reports, reviewing records, writing briefs and providing helpful case consultation. Attorneys from many states have sent their clients to Dr. Heller’s offices in New York and New Jersey and requested he travel to perform an evaluation on site. Dr. Heller is used for forensic evaluations related to civil litigation, criminal and family court, from across the United States.
